Demolition begins this month on the site for Canberra’s newest and most prestigious office accommodation, Civic Quarter. Amalgamated Property Group (APG), privately owned by Mr Graham Potts, is developing the project which will kick off in the coming weeks with the demolition of some 30,000sqm of office space in the Canberra CBD.
“This is one of the largest demolition projects undertaken in Canberra, ” said Phil O’Brien, General Manager of APG. “We anticipate it will take around five months as we carefully deconstruct the five buildings on the site and recycle as much as we can. The process begins with stripping out the furniture and fittings, followed by the internal fitout and structural demolition.
The majority of the structural materials are concrete, bricks, steel, cabling and glass. We are expecting to recycle 80 to 90% of the materials taken from the site. Approximately 80% of that will be recycled right here in Canberra. The recycling of these materials has been an important part of our planning.”
Spanning across an entire city block bordered by Northbourne Avenue and Mort Street, the building’s architecture is designed to complement and respect the unique green pocket of Veterans Park and the existing Mort Street trees within the city context. The 18,000sqm 12-level office tower planned for the site, is a 21st century workplace that supports flexible working and wellness programs that encourage collaboration in an agile workplace.
Phil O’Brien, General Manager of APG said “The innovative building will be based around leading-edge technologies and will redefine the corporate lifestyle in the ACT market.
“We’re excited to get this project underway. This will be Canberra’s premier office building and it will transform the office accommodation available to corporate tenants in the ACT market”
Centrally located, Civic Quarter is located just moments from the Canberra Centre, and is adjacent to Canberra’s largest new infrastructure project, the ACT Light Rail Network.
APG is well known in the ACT for their leading commercial developments, including the award-winning Louisa Lawson Building in Tuggeranong which houses the Department of Human Services and 28 Sydney Ave, Forrest, the Canberra Offices of PwC & IBM.
Completion of the Civic Quarter project is slated for mid 2019. May + Russell Architects have been appointed as detailed design architects for delivery of the building. Construction Control have been appointed as the construction manager of the project and the building is available for lease through Colliers International.
